Read full description of the books:I received this book free for review from the author in exchange for an honest review. Despite the privilege of receiving a free book, I’m absolutely candid about it below because I believe authors and readers will benefit most from honest reviews rather than vacuous 5-star reviews.
The nutshell view on this book is your standard noir story line in which our protagonists are on the hunt for a stolen bit of artwork. The plot twists and turns and comes out pretty much the way you expected it to at about 20% through the book.
To the positive end of things, the book certainly has taken a fresh stab at the mystery novel. The geek themes are strong in this one. Our hero is in search of classic comic art and during his adventures he sees some real gems of the comic world. The author isn't afraid to show his erudition of the topic. The action is fast-paced and straightforward and has that classic feel of the old crime shows as it rattles on about seemingly excessive details. It reads like the introduction to a Dragnet episode at times.
To the negative, if you don't happen to be a riotously huge fan of classic comics, the references can tend to become a bit skippable. For the most part I have passing familiarity with most of the works referenced but I can't tell you why Superman issue 305 is better or worse than issue 309. That's the level of detail we get into here. Also, from a plot perspective this one is exceedingly predictable. About a fifth of the way through the author telegraphs his ending and once the action wraps up it's more of a: "Yeah, figured" than it is an "oh! Really!??"
In summary, this one is fresh from a setting standpoint and stale from a story standpoint. The characters are fun and the action moves wonderfully so it's an old plot but it still remains fun and interesting. A good choice especially if you are very much into the classic comics.
PS: I hope my review was helpful. If it was not, then please let me know what I left out that you’d want to know. I always aim to improve.
